Tram services to Middlewood and Malin Bridge will be suspended for most of April due to rail replacement works.

Commuters are getting set for a month of disruption as major rail replacement works take the Sheffield Supertram service out of action on its Hillsborough routes.

As well as replacing worn rails the project will enable extra new trams and tram-train vehicles to run on the lines in preparation for route extensions to Rotherham and beyond.

Planned to start this weekend, the maintenance will mean no trams will run between Shalesmoor and terminuses at Malin Bridge and Middlewood.

A replacement bus service will be put in place for travellers on the routes.

For the duration of works the yellow Stagecoach Supertram route will instead terminate at Castle Square rather than running on to its usual Middlewood destination.

The blue route Stagecoach Supertram will terminate at Shalesmoor instead of Malin Bridge.

Stops at Infirmary Road, Langsett/Primrose View, Bamforth Street, Hillsborough, Malin Bridge, Hillsborough Park, Leppings Lane and Middlewood will all be affected and will effectively be ‘closed’ for most of April whilst the maintenance takes place.

New ‘Y1’ (yellow route) and ‘B1’ (blue route) bus services will service nearby bus stops instead, running between Angel Street and Malin Bridge/Middlewood.

Traffic restrictions

A number of different restrictions and diversions for other traffic will also take place at various times during the rail replacement works too.

Car journeys along the routes and in the area are expected to take longer as the work will cause traffic disruptions.

From 23.00 Friday 28th March until 06.00 Monday 31st March: Holme Lane at Hillsborough corner will be closed to traffic heading towards Malin Bridge. Traffic from the Malin Bridge direction will not be able to turn right onto Langsett Road.

From 06.00 Tuesday 1st April until 05.00 Friday 4th April: Traffic lights will be in service on Langsett Road near Ripley Street, however traffic can travel as normal along the route.

From 23.00 Friday 4th April until 06.00 Monday 7th April: Hillsborough Corner will be closed to all traffic EXCEPT vehicles travelling between Langsett Road and Holme Lane.

Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th April: Y1 bus services will divert along Penistone Road (instead of Infirmary Road, Langsett Road and Middlewood Road) to and from Middlewood. These buses will serve all stops on Penistone Road.

From 06.00 Tuesday 8th April until 05.00 Thursday 10th April: Traffic lights will be in service on Langsett Road near Ripley Street, resulting in Ripley Street being closed.

Friday 18th to Sunday 20th April: The B1 service will be unable to serve Malin Bridge and will instead start from and terminate at Hillsborough. SL2 services on Saturday 19th April will operate as usual to/from Malin Bridge.

(I know it's not your fault but they don't care about comments to them, they may read yours :) )

Just to confirm (if anyone else was wondering) the busses will not serve west street this year. If you are at west street best to get a blue tram to shalesmoor then connect to your yellow/ blue bus there.

Thanks Supertram, a second summer ruined, glad I moved onto the tram route to make getting around sheffield with no car easier/ faster.

Not even any compensation for the fact they are working on my doorstep (virtually) for a month, looking forward to the noise.

No wonder they were trying to sweeten people with the 'tram only' ticket discount ... glad I didn't fall for it. Quicker and cheaper for me to bus straight to work.
