Remember 90s Friday-night TV programme The Word? The new video from Sheffield band Reverend and the Makers reminds us of it...

With a new album just around the corner, Reverend and the Makers have released a video for their first single from the LP, 'The Only One'.

Shot entirely against a background of pop-art style images and coloured videos it is reminiscent of the almost psychedelic live music segments on Channel 4's The Word programme in the 1990s.

The sound is unmistakably recognisable as a Reverend and the Makers song; "Proper Music" as lead singer and 'The Reverend' himself, Jon McClure, would say.

As with a number of tracks from the band in recent years, the music is insanely catchy (try and get it out of your head all day once you've heard it!) with an infectious chorus ready to be sung aloud at one of their seemingly legendary concerts.

Marking the run up to the release of new album 'Thirty Two' (so named after McClure's age), the singer has been doing a series of impromptu house gigs around the country.

To get a concert in their living room or garage all fans had to do was tweet @Reverend_Makers (an account controlled by Jon McClure himself) with a picture of their pre-order confirmation and one person in the relevant area for that evening was selected at random for a visit and a sing-song.

Finishing off the series of special gigs, the band are playing at Sheffield's Winter Gardens for The Star Live this Sunday at 6:30pm, which will be live streamed online. Watch live from 6:30pm here:

Hopefully the age-led title of the album isn't a sign that the singer is growing up too much though: as well as writing lyrics for and fronting one of Sheffield's biggest bands we love reading his spats with the likes of Calvin Harris and Radio 1's head of music George Ergatoudis on Twitter.

Jon McClure certainly is The Heavyweight Champion of the World when it comes to Twitter feuds! Give him a follow @Reverend_Makers.

I am me. Sheffield born, bred and proud. A Sheffield Wednesday fan, web person and marketing guy. I have a huge and varied musical tastes. Watch TV and Films like most others, so I am pretty much... errr... 'normal'. Whatever that means.
