In just seven years Fancie managed to make themselves a household name in Sheffield.
Now a new era starts for the Steel City company after being acquired by Matt and Nina Bingham, owners of popular gastropubs The Milestone and The Wig & Pen.
From humble roots of cupcakes being baked in a domestic kitchen to a small empire including six shops and a cafe-bar on the sought-after Ecclesall Road, Fancie appeared to hit the big time.
However, an outlet in the Meadowhall shopping centre seemingly proved to be a step too far as high costs pushed the business to collapse and forced owner Amanda Perry to bankruptcy earlier this year.
A number of the company’s assets were sold to enable the Ecclesall Road location to continue trading, and that shop has subsequently been sold on today.
It seems the new owners are a perfect candidates to take the reins, with Amanda saying on her blog: “Matt & Nina had Fancie Cupcakes for their wedding 4 years ago and have been long and loyal friends to the business.
“They were the only choice when it came to who could take the reins and continue Fancie in the spirit it was started, with the ethos of great food, great cakes and great people.”
Amanda admits there have been plenty of ups and downs over the years: “I have laughed (a lot) and cried (a lot), I have made some wonderful friends who started off as customers and had some of the best staff who have stuck by the business during some very difficult times, for that I am truly grateful.”
Posting on behalf of herself and partner Steve, she added: “We wish Matt, Nina and the whole team there the best of luck for the future and look forward to the very surreal experience of being able to go in to Fancie as a customer!”
