Work has today started on replacing Supertram track between White Lane and Halfway, causing the service to be out of action on the route for around the next month.
As well as replacing worn rails the project will enable extra new trams and tram-train vehicles to run on the lines in preparation for route extensions to Rotherham and beyond. Similar works took place last month on tracks running through Hillsborough.
The essential maintenance will mean no trams will run between Gleadless Townend and the terminus at Halfway. A replacement bus service will be put in place for travellers on the routes.
A new Stagecoach ‘B1’ (blue route) bus service will be in place between the stop opposite Sainsburys at Gleadless Townend and Halfway, operating at around the same frequency as the tram would have, running every 10 or 20 minutes dependent on the time of day.
Tram tickets will be valid on board the replacement buses and passengers are advised that no additional tickets are required for travellers changing from tram to replacement or vise versa.
Tram stops affected by the works include White Lane, Birley Lane, Birley Moor Road, Hackenthorpe, Donetsk Way, Moss Way, Crystal Peaks, Waterthorpe and Halfway.
Stagecoach Supertram note that for the duration of these works there will be no service at all for Beighton/Drake House Lane, or at Westfield when travelling towards Halfway.
A number of weekend alterations will be in place during the rail replacement works too.
26 and 27 April: On the weekend of 26 and 27 April, White Lane will be closed meaning buses will divert and therefore will not serve White Lane. Additional stops will be included on the diversion for affected customers.
3 to 5 May: The weekend of 3-5 May road closure on Donetsk Way mean buses will divert via Hackenthorpe Village.
10 and 11 May: During the weekend of 10-11 May, road closures around Moss Way will result in slight diversions to buses around Moss Way and Crystal Peaks.
