A Sheffield suburb has been listed as one of the ‘Top 10 dodgy British neighbourhoods’.
Gleadless Valley appears at number four in the list, published on the British Problems website.
The article states that the area is a “no-go zone” and adds that “crime, anti-social behaviour and unemployment on the estate [are] double the city average.”
Another claim by the website is that life expectancy in the neighbourhood is also lower than the city average and that “emergency admissions to hospital [are] higher than elsewhere in Sheffield.”
However, the website article does not publish sources or statistics to back up its chart.
“Once dubbed ‘happy valley’ when its optimistic residents moved in, Gleadless Valley is now one of the dodgiest neighbourhoods in Sheffield,” concludes the author.
Other districts in the 'top 10 dodgy British neighbourhoods' list include Possilpark in Glasgow, Toxteth in Liverpool and Harpurhey in Manchester (which the article dubs ‘Gunchester’).
Areas in Middlesbrough, Bristol, London and Birmingham are also represented on the unwelcome chart, which has two entries each from Manchester (Harpurhey and Moss Side) and London (Edmonton and Hackney).
Stapleton Road in Bristol is listed in the number one spot. Its write up says the area has been locally called ‘junkie street’ or ‘crackhead alley’ and that “this stretch of syringe-littered tarmac is run by killers, drug addicts, hookers and pimps.”
The article has sparked a lot of debate on social networks and website comments, with one user, ‘Nikky’ typing: “You are clearly not from Sheffield.”
The commenter argues that “Pitsmoor is the most dodgy place in Sheffield.”
