Leisure centre users were evacuated and firefighters called to Ponds Forge this evening after a car crashed into the building.
The Citroen Picasso was seen coming off Park Square roundabout before veering off Sheaf Street into the side of the leisure centre, near the chlorine control panel for the 50m competition pool.
Nobody was hurt in the incident, but a structural engineer was called to inspect the damage to the building before the car could be removed and a ‘minor chlorine leak’ was fixed.
A line of bricks were visibly moved and a large crack could be seen along with a hole in the wall where the car struck.
Ponds Forge International Sports Centre posted an update to their Facebook page, advising that: “There is no danger to anyone in the immediate area.”
A spokesperson for the leisure centre said: “We will reopen tomorrow morning with the exception of the pool areas whilst an assessment is made of the damage caused by the car crashing into the building.”
A number of exams are planned to take place at the venue tomorrow and will still go ahead. The gym and sports hall will also be open.
